简介
1991版曾荣获当年中国图书奖一等奖。台湾、香港商务印书馆和日本、韩国的出版机构相继选译和出版了这套丛书，丛书的英文选译本也随后面市。 新版由原先每本5万字增加为8万字。合并了一些内容近似的图书，同时增加了一些选题，对古代难辨字还注了音，并补充了有关学科的最新研究成果。成为一套内容丰富、文字规范、装帧精美、可读性强的真正的图书精品。 丛书编委会及作者队伍强大，名家云集，他们中有著名学者，有北京大学的校长，有商务印书馆的老总，几乎都是著名大学和研究机构的学者，可以说，这套丛书，是名附其实的大专家给普读者写小书。他们认真严谨的写作态度，保证了丛书的科学性，文字表述方面做到了深入浅出，通俗易懂。 丛书是一个较为完备的关于中国古代文化的知识体系。可大致分为10个专题，分别是思想、文化、教育、科技、考古、史地、军事、经济、文艺、体育。从多角度、多层面勾勒出中华民族五千年来历史文化发展的轨迹，反映了中国文化的基本面貌和中华民族精神。特别值得一提的是，丛书加强了对中国古代科学技术成说的介绍，文理兼备，显示出编者整体上把握传统历史文化的独特视角，是一套中国传统文化知识的百科丛书。同时也是一套增长知识、陶冶情趣，进行爱国主义教育的好书。

编者献辞
本丛书的前身有110个专题，涉及历史文化的各个方面，由商务印书馆、中共中央党校出版社、天津教育出版社、山东教育出版社联合出版。现由编委会对类目重新加以调整，确定了考古、史地、思想、文化、教育、科技、军事、经济、文艺、体育十个门类、共100个专题，由商务印书馆独家出版。每个专题也由原先的五万多字护大为八万字左右，内容更为丰富，叙述较前详备。希望这套丛书能多角度、多层次地反映中国文化的主流与特点，读者能够从中认识中国文化的基本面貌、了解中华民族的精神所系，这就是编者的最大愿望。 中国文化史知识丛书编辑委员会 一九九六年四月
